Some huge movements shape decades and some talented artists shape music of these same decades. DJ Premier shaped an entire side of the 90’s by himself producing the best tracks for the best east cost rappers, big time, with heavy, aggressive sometimes sorrowful instrumentals.
I’ll stop here right away, I don’t want to fall into sophisticated manners, I’m just a white guy living in Paris anyway right? But come on, DJ Premier flipped my all vision of rap music when I discovered his whole work pretty late in 2000…

A little explanation about the artwork by Akroe
The hardest thing about creation is maybe to find a simple idea impactful enough to retain attention and that could be declined easily.

So here is the simple idea, so is the story, about the artwork for the first FORTUNE’s album.
Akroe in fact, gathered different influences that the band provided to him (artworks covers and random pictures), squeezed, tortured and methodically joined them to make a coherent explosion of colors.
So it might seem abstract at first sight, but it all makes sense when you have the explanation right?

We knew Dave1 was a great dancer.

Come on, this song is about having sex sooner or latter and the big smiley thin stem in the middle that barely makes an effort to dance in his polo neck is Eddie Kendricks, and I am pretty sure he did not come back home by himself that night…I am maybe going to far in inventing people’s life here, but but you have to know that none the less, Eddie was the lead singer of The Temptations from 1960 to 1971.
This track “Girl you need a change of mind” was a classic played at the NYC underground club “The Loft”. There definitely is a New-York soul in this song.

Here is a perfect example of what a Philadelphia sound could be. Philadelphian producers were the masters at using strings energetically. The other particular thing about productions from Philly is that they really made and effort to keep a strong songwriting while other productions was more about repeating words and simple verses.
We are in 1974, and The Three Degrees here might appear to you as a disco cliché, but they were kind of the essence of what Philly disco was.

Some artists may have participated to make disco a cliché that was actually more about using formulas that would make your sound recognizable by a growing audience and then, potential consumers.
Gloria Gaynor, Barry White and McCrae really took advantage of these “disco formulas”, but McCrae kept the beat more laid back introducing sweet vocals that I particularly prefer…

In the meantime, disco freaks didn’t get trapped in the Disco biz and got heavily into imports like this classic French disco track from Bimbo Jet…
I am kind of embarrassed to post that here, but faithfully this track is a now a common classic.

Fortune are coming back in the DP Podcast game (remember this one and this one).

It starts as a pretty sensual mix making you believe that your are going to have a smooth time but then switches on a complete delightful and bizarre non stop dance track.

The scene might probably be something like that:
you are dancing on joyful sounds when a firm hand coming from behind lays on your shoulder, you turn around and you perceive the whole Fortune band staring at you and pointing at a dark room from where a massive early dance music escapes.
This invitation comes at the minute 32 with the classic track from A Number Of Names. You’ll decide to follow them or not…a choice will have to be made. Choose wisely, listen carefully.

Historically speaking this Barrabas’s song might not be the perfect introduction since disco at its beginning was about Black & Latin underground club music, but anyway, it is here more about to put you in the mood for this first Friday Disco Juice and I hope this Barrabas‘ song will do the trick.
Well, apart from these considerations, I also find the invasion of the stage by these white chicks in panties kind of fascinating, even if the singer, that mostly looks like the owner of your local dirty club where you just go when you are way boozed, doesn’t look that right in his snaky t-shirt…

The song is about making out with girls while you are touring, to me it is a disco version of Adam Kesher’s Local Girl song in a less oneiric way…

This Manu Dibango’s track, was apparently and originally a French pressing on the Fiesta Label (how cool this label name is?) and recorded in Paris.
A Classic

In 98 I bought this first Chemical Brothers CD mix “Brother’s Gonna Work It Out” that came right after their first album, I couldn’t really find out where this intro was coming from. Any blaxploitation expert would think it’s obvious but now I know, it’s actually an extracted scene from the movie The Mack.

Willie Hutch is the author of all the soundtrack for this movie and specially of this major track Brothers’s gonna work it out

Friday Disco Juice #2 is on its way.

I’ve been hidden my love for disco for too long like if I’ve would have hidden a repressed homosexuality. It’s time for my coming out, the party begins this Friday right here.

And here is I think my oldest memory of a song, remembering chasing the disco ball light reflections on the floor. I’ve noticed very late that the lyrics were kind of tough and they made one of the biggest hit with a cheesy and unforgettable disco instrumentals.

FORTUNE - HIGHWAY (ep) Available in Digital

I’ve lastly been hit by some great songs and bands, the music is definitely lively, so fuck the crisis, I was raised in the crisis in a region that’s been sinister for more than 3 decades, growing up with this constant fear of being unemployed.

The debut LP of XX is so relevant in these gloomy times for the economy , if you’re a little sensitive you could cry listening to this album and that would be more than normal.

Smith Westerns were a stunning discovery last week for me, it actually could be seen as an another noisy garage band but they’re actually doing it their own way, really love the album too.

I was first sensitized by “Walkabout” from Atlas Sound but I quickly switched on “Sheila”, I guess it’s because it’s more obvious. I didn’t get their last album yet but I’m sure it’s great.

Black Lips will be in my head for ever I think, I haven’t been carried away in first place by their last album. I’ve seen them for the fourth time in Barcelona @Primavera Sound Festival last summer, it was maybe the best concert where I had the best fun on my own. So I took “200 Million Thousand” with me on vacations, determined to give a chance to this album, and now I’m really found of it.

I’ve discovered this track of Chateau Marmont very late this summer. I went to an after party with them and they put this crazy  “Beagle” track. These guys are full of kindness and fun, I wish them the best for their upcoming album, really.

This The Units’ track remixed by Rory Phillips is just an hymn of joy facing “high presure days”. This synthfunk pioneer band from the late 70’s are  still more than modern.

Big shout out to our mates at Fool House and Sound Pelegrino for their work on this magnificent debut EP of Delorean and this dancing Gucci Vump Remix.

I didn’t cry on XX but I really almost did on this Memory Cassette’s song. We already showcased their video earlier this week, a must see.

Great slow Remix from La Roux

Neon Indian is lately maybe the freshest guy I’ve been listening to in a so dreamed “electro scene”. Listening to this remix of Au Revoir Simone is like flying on the back of a fluffy beast.

James Pants turned the song in a complete other way keeping the original vocals, he totally enhanced the smooth potential of the song and did it with a very certain talent. A must have for the summer !

Eli Escobar made no compromises;  he takes us in an 9 minutes early disco journey for the joy of us all, but still, ingeniously and progressively bringing the original bass line, the synth and the vocals slightly increasing the tempo. AMOUR.

You have to know that this guy is a boss, I am not talking about music here, he is a Subway boss in Bordeaux (this town again !).
Do you know what that means ? It means that he knows how to make delicious sandwiches, but he doesn’t do them anymore since he manage people that make them for him, so he has plenty of time to think about music.

Well, The Loove is really into that “making with my hand” thing and so also produced delightful Techno tunes on his own. He was in Paris last April, and delivered a crazy house mix at a party in La Flèche D’or that says a lot about his influences.

We were actually waiting to launch the new website to start it again.
So I’ve put this nice kind of sulphurous but arty picture just to draw your attention on this post. This is not my girl, this is not my super stylish mom back in the 70’s, she is not even a hot friend, I’ve just randomly, as usual, found this on the Internet but I can’t remember which photographer took this picture…

This DP podcast was recorded at the beginning of last January, but there is something fresh about it since on a week-end 2 weeks ago I had that conversation with The Shoes at the Adam Kesher’s live in Reims, funny guys.

Anyway, they were telling me how much they love the remix they did of “Local Girl” and I never really had the opportunity to tell them I was digging it too. They were telling me that they got suddenly very inspired by Adam Kesher’s song and started to work on a remix very late at night stuck in a room in Liège, Belgium and worked 6 hours straight until they finished it.
Okayyy…that do not sound like a crazy story, but that’s a story anyway and it gives you an insight, so it’s good enough I guess…

S2OK is that type of very gentle guy who knows how to use graphic design softwares with skills, he is someone we can call a “graphic designer”. On ne peut que vous le confirmer, Charly est en pleine forme. Impécable il ne change pas de classe et est toujours aussi généreux avec les filles qu’il adore mais, aussi et surout pour la déconne.
